Brazil will need $36bn to expand cane production [Registered]

Brazil’s sugar and ethanol industries look set for robust growth over the next 10 years but hefty investment will be required to meet the projected expansion, said Andy Duff, a food and agribusiness researcher at Rabobank. Speaking at the International Sugar Organisation’s annual conference in London on 30th November, Mr Duff noted that the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Organisation, Unica, has forecast that the South American country will be processing 1.038bn tonnes of cane by 2020, up from an expected 633million tonnes in 2010/11 and a possible 829million tonnes in 2015/16.
