Brazil – BNDES offers U$1.97 billion in credit to revitalize cane and ethanol production [Registered]

Brazil’s national development bank BNDES will this year offer a second credit line of 4bn reais (US$1.97bn) to cane growers in a bid to rejuvenate the country’s ethanol sector. The pledge forms part of the federal government-backed Prorenova program designed to encourage replanting fields that have been ratooned for more than three years (to check declining in cane productivity), BNDES said in a note. The program also offered 4bn reais in credit in 2012, allowing for replanting of 410,000 hectares of cane crop for sugar and ethanol production.
