Bone-inspired steel conquers metal fatigue [Registered]

Steel that has a laminated nanosubstructure like that found in bone is much more resistant to fatigue and so cracks less easily when stressed, according to new work by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, Kyushu University in Japan and the Max-Planck Institut für Eisenforschung in Germany. Fatigue can lead to abrupt and sometimes catastrophic failure in metal parts subjected to repeated loading or stress, and it is the main cause of failure in structural components found in everything from aircraft and spacecraft to trains and bridges.…
