Bayer and KWS to breed non-GM herbicide-tolerant sugar beet [Registered]

Bayer CropScience and KWS SAAT AG are partnering to develop sugarbeet cultivar that is tolerant to herbicides used in broad-spectrum weed control. Scheduled to be released during the second of the decade, this non-GM beet cultivar is likely to be welcomed by farmers. The joint research commenced in 2001. According to Bayer, tolerance to herbicides was not created, but occurred spontaneously in cultivated beet cells. The resistant sugarbeet cells were selected in cell and tissue cultures and then regenerated to sugarbeet plants that can be propagated.
