BASF invests $30 million in Renmatix to develop its cellulosic sugars producing technology [Registered]

In the production of cellulosic biofuels, the key process is the pre-treatment of lignocellulosic feedstocks to release sugars from hemi-cellulose and cellulose which yeast and other microbes can ferment. Renmatix, a startup company has developed a novel process that uses supercritical water to release sugars from lignocellulosic feedstocks. BASF recently announced that it is investing $30 million in Renmatix to help it scale up the process. Industrial sugars are important renewable resources for the chemical industry and can be used to produce biofuels or basic chemical products and intermediates by fermentative processes.
