Avantium begins producing biobased polyester at a pilot plant [Registered]

Avantium has begun producing biobased polyester at a pilot plant in Geleen, the Netherlands. The polyester plant is the first part of the pilot plant that Avantium is building at its new site (Chemelot). The polyester plant will be used to demonstrate its YXY technology for producing, developing and testing biobased polyesters, such as poly-ethylene-furanoate (PEF). Avantium has demonstrated that PEF has numerous superior properties over oil-based PET (polyethylene-terephthalate), including barrier properties (oxygen, carbon-dioxide and water) and its ability to withstand heat.
