AVA Biochem starts producing 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from lignocellulosic feedstocks [Registered]

The Swiss start-up AVA Biochem, recently announced commercial scale production of the platform chemical, 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) at its plant Biochem-1 in Muttenz, Switzerland. During the initial phase, Biochem-1 will produce up to 20 tonnes 5-HMF annually. Lignocellulosic feedstock is used in the production of the chemical. As a bifunctional molecule, 5-HMF allows for a targeted downstream chemistry and offers access to numerous industrial applications across a wide range of industries from chemicals and plastics to food and pharmaceuticals.
