Australia to start cane campaign early [Registered]

Australia will start its 2011 campaign about four weeks earlier than usual due to signs of sugar content peaking early in some districts, according to industry officials. Sucrogen, Australia’s largest sugar miller and refiner, now owned by Singapore’s Wilmar International, started milling cane at its Pioneer Mill in the Burdekin region on May 18, in the north-eastern state of Queensland. Queensland accounts for around 95% of Australia’s sugar production. The crushing season usually starts in mid-June and extends to November.
