Australia – Resurgence in cane production in Queensland as previous growers return [Registered]

Many of the Queensland’s cane growers who left the business or diversified into other crops some eight years ago, have returned to produce cane on the back of high prices, reports The Courier Mail. Driven as much by politics, in 2004 when the global sugar prices were in single digits, the Australian government provided A$444 million to growers who wanted to exit cane production. About one in every eight cane growers in the state took the exit payout, which averaged $91,278 a grower.
