Australia – Launch date for sugar industry’s new research body may be delayed [Registered]

Sugar industry’s new research body, Sugar Research Australia, that was set to commence its activities on 1 July 2013, has several hurdles to surmount to have the legal authority to operate. These are securing approval from the Federal Minister Agriculture, Joe Ludwig, endorsed by both houses of parliament and receiving Royal Assent. Cane growers and sugar millers voted overwhelmingly last year in support of the formation of a new body to replace the roles of the Sugar Research and Development Corporation, the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations and Sugar Research Ltd.
