Angola – Drive to self-sufficiency in sugar production on schedule [Registered]

The U$500 million joint venture to expand sugar production in Angola is on track. Speaking to Bloomberg, the Managing Director Carlos Henrique Mathias said that the cane crop will be ready for harvesting next year. Output is forecast at 40,000 tonnes of sugar next year which will increase to full capacity of 260,000 tonnes by 2018. The 42,000 ha cane plantation and factory are located some 320 km east of Luanda, the capital. Some 15% of cane will be diverted to ethanol production and on-site cogent unit will produce 45 MW.
